  • Para/sympathetic Nervous System

    Both reflect each other’s roles;

    Sympathetic:

    The “fight or flight” response must sound familiar… a LARGE burst of energy.

    Gets you “pumped up”. Very much a motivation inspirer. it controls your body’s response during times of stress.

    ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!

    Para-:

    Totally opposite.

    This makes you relaxed. “Chilled out”. But as it is the opposite of “sympathetic”, it can restores the body. Returning it back to a state of calm.

  • Acetylcholine?!?

    I’m on a mission….

    I wish to know exactly what role this plays in your body. So I turned to Google:


    “Acetylcholine is an organic compound that functions in the brain and body of many types of animals as a neurotransmitter. Its name is derived from its chemical structure: it is an ester of acetic acid and choline. Parts in the body that use or are affected by acetylcholine are referred to as cholinergic.”

    All of this means zilch to me though. The best way I’d describe it is “medical jargon”.

    So, if anyone who reads this, please put me out of my misery….

  • Willy Wonka, Willie Wonka, the amazing chocolatier

    Chocolate…. Not so great with your diabetic though.

    But the film “Wonka” really makes you smile. I won’t write a synopsis, just trust you’ll take my word. It did really mean me smile. Great storytelling and much entertainment.

    Surprise cameos from Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Grant, and lovely backstory about chocolate cartels.

    But not too much about nutrition or ingredients/how it’s made. Apart from the fantastic ways Wonka makes his chocolates.

    Some facts about chocolate;

    it’s very nutritious (with big amounts of cocoa, much fibre and minerals including potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and selenium, and also has good, oil based fats. It contains stimulants like caffeine and theobromine too),

    Many antioxidants (dark has higher amounts of cocoa where all the goodie flavanols are. These are antioxidants that prevent problems with heart health).

    Improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure (this property is when the ingredient endothelial nitric oxide (NO) which lowers your blood pressure)

    Reduces the risk of heart disease (A flavonoids subtype called flavanols which, again, lowers heart disease. Funnily enough, studies found a smaller risk of insulin resistance and high blood pressure [mustn’t account for how dense it is in sugar….)

    Relevant to my brain damage it improves brain function (mproves brain function: Flavonols in dark chocolate have a positive impact on brain function, including better reaction time, visual-spatial awareness and stronger memory. Though research is ongoing, one reason for this may be that flavonols increase blood flow to the brain.

    Aside from the chocolate theme, very uplifting and interesting.

  • Emotional Presents

    What I really noticed is how many emotional presents I got on my birthday. Our culture puts so much focus on physical presents, where emotional presents are certainly different, & sometimes as good if not better.

    A good example of one is I got some phone calls, with people wishing me a happy birthday (of course) & saying how they believe in me. But not just saying “I believe in you”… but giving a good example.

    Another example is I got a bunch of flowers; delivered to my place (who they were from found out my address), the flowers was a good breed, a beautiful card & I knew & loved the florist. So seriously congratulations to her.

  • 11/6 – The Heart

    I was watching this thing (which is on Netflix, hurray) called “Human, the world within”. It’ll inspire a lot of future blog posts, it really does tech you a lot. I guess I have a thirst for knowledge, that is maybe why it interests me so.

    In this particular episode it talks about the relationship between the heart & the brain.

    There is a syndrome cardo subo cardiomyopathy otherwise known as death from a broken heart. The cardo subo is an ornament found in Japan. This pot is known to be famous for its shape; it has a thin neck & a thick mid-section. When you go through a lot of stress, like death of a loved one, your heart reacts & the heart’s shape turns into the shape of a cardo subo.
