I was listening to this download I have which is old episodes of radio 4 programs. This one in particular was an episode of “workaholics” which I imagine the old (& the current) Leuty likes. It does explore etymology amongst other things.

They do a round on phobias, where it is said that phobias come from the Greek word where “phobos“ which means“fear”.

“Arigata mayooahtoo” is a Japanese word which means when someone offers to do you a favour & you decline because you think it’d make you worse off, they do it anyway & it goes wrong, but because of social convention you have to behave as if you’re grateful.

Natalie Hames comments that apppolocyntosis was formed by Senicca & it means the act of turning into a pumpkin. The Romans, for political reasons had to believe that when an emperor dies he turned into a god, this was called apotheosis.

Seneca mocks Claudius (thinking he was terrible), & says he goes through “appolocyntosis” which is the act of turning into a pumpkin.

I am very reluctant to put any pictures or videos of me up because I am very scared. I worry when others will think of me. I have never been afraid of things but I really don’t want to put pictures of me because I have evolved a self consciencness. It’a the paradox of Facebook. I guess this quote is really relevant ; oh to see ourselves as others see us.

On social media we do become hyper sensitive about how we look. I’m no exception. Got to remember that vanity is a sin. One which I am guilty where I am still my own worst enemy. It seems like a problem we all have.
