  • Veblen goods

This is the theory that if it’s more expensive, it makes these things are more desirable.

A good example is the Louis Vuitton handbag. People don’t buy the item for any design detail… they don’t care. They buy it for the name. The acclaim the brand has made for themselves, through advertising or values customers like celebrities who they make an icon for the brand.

In short, people will buy for the name. This is best exemplified in the Louis Vuitton handbag; people don’t care for the design, just as long as it’s got the “LV” logo on it.

These high fashion brands make no money from the clothes, they do from the Veblen goods. The name they have built for their company. Selling cheaper –in comparison- goods, like handbags, wallets, perfumes or cosmetics.

In a way it’s saying the more expensive & unattainable it is, the better. Like showing how special you are. How precious you are. Because you can attain this expensive thing which must have taken a lot of money & effort to get to point of sale.

  • Next

I got a birthday present which was muchly appreciated, for Next. I wanted to browse before I committed my voucher, but I could not use the website.

The online store was not easy to navigate at all. There was no ads, which was probably good because pop ups can be annoying, but ads are mostly where fashion gets its money from.

Just the bad experience of browsing online made me dislike the brand. I couldn’t navigate the website at all.

In a time which we are just coming out of (the pandemic) where all consumers are forced to buy their clothes online, the main focus should be on making the online store very desirable & easy to use.

It wasn’t at all easy to use & there was no attempt to make me want to buy anything.

Me being an ex-fashion designer I think my comments actually have some influence on the fashion world (who am I kidding, of course they don’t) but me as a consumer I have no desire to shop at Next, & I hope my readers don’t want to.

Spread the word about how bad this brand is.

  • Size 10

For all those women ( most men won’t understand) in clothes I used to be a 6 or 8 (very skinny).

I was in a coma for 10 months & pretty sedentary for a long time after that. So I gained a fair bit of weight.

So now like pretty much every woman, I want to loose some weight.

But there’s good news! The fashion industry seems to be following this trend in gaining weight. The models used to be paper thin, unhealthily so.

But now plus size models are getting more work. Setting the way for the place size models, Levis has a “plan prize” range, where they use plus size models for their campaign.

So fatter models seem to be en vogue. I, like most humans, have a strange relationship with my clothes. I have a lot of clothes I had when I was a size 6/8, & now I don’t fit.

I found one pair of jeans which are pretty irreplaceable. They have my name embroidered up the side seam, but they’re too small for me. I do really love this garment.

So I’ve partnered with someone who’s a tailor, who I knew in my past life. He’s letting them out, so they’ll fit me.

I haven’t received them yet, but when I do, the pictures will follow.

Just to justify the title, I went from an 6/8 to now a 10/12.

  • Where are my shoes?

    So I can remember that I had some brilliant shoes in my past life , but I can’t find them. They’re there ones;

& James Bonds curious case of “where are my shoes?” sounds like sounds something Carry Bradshaw would be interested in.

  • 19/3 – Online Shopping

In current times almost all of us have been driven online to shop. For most things, you can get them online, but what I’m getting at is clothing (because it’s my trade).

They design around that perfect body, & they call that the “sample”. They make the sample usually very little & trickle down from that, to the bigger sizes.

Each brand evolves in a different way. They may have started out from a different point.

For each brand, each has a “model” body, which most people can’t fit.

Each brand has its own DNA, some grow in different ways, some have a different starting point.

Just remember that their is no fitting rooms so you’re stuck with what you’ve bought.
