1955 there was a single person who, secretly bought all the onions in the US. Vince Casuga, otherwise known as the onion king, cornered the onion market in the USA, where he bought out every onion.
When he owned them, he could control the price. So people didn’t find out that he controlled the onion price, he had to do it inconspicuously, so other onion sellers didn’t drive up the price.
Not only that, he bought onion futures, potential onions. A big bet where you promise that you’re going to buy this potential onion for an agreed price.
A bit like what the lottery has turned out.
